Key Accounts Master Course held for Basin Electric members

Basin Electric hosted Touchstone Energy’s Key Accounts Master Course for its members May 20-23 at its Headquarters in Bismarck, North Dakota. Twenty members attended the training, an in-depth and exercise-driven course designed to hone the skills of key accounts professionals.

“An average of 40 percent of a member’s revenue comes from key accounts, so it’s important to have a plan in place to ensure the utility is taking measures to support that revenue,” said Erick Rheam, the trainer who conducted the course. He added that in addition to the revenue key accounts provide their member co-ops, many of them are critical to the communities where they are located, providing jobs, services, and even a sense of identity.

Brett Kwasniewski, manager of member services at Lake Region Electric in Webster, South Dakota, said there is much more that goes into a key accounts program than he thought prior to attending the course. “The most beneficial thing I learned was time and priority management,” Kwasniewski said. “I used to try to constantly accomplish 100 different things, but now I know I shouldn’t try to take on the world in one day. I need to focus on five things and do them great, while realizing that all those other things need attention, too.”

The course also focused on topics, including:

  • What makes a key accounts program successful and how to emulate it;
  • A proven three-phased process to build or rebuild a proper key accounts program;
  • The traits of effective key account representatives and how to maintain a strong program, while managing other duties and responsibilities;
  • How to launch or relaunch a program that will guarantee success and momentum;
  • How to select the right tools and services to fit the needs of the business community; and
  • The importance of Member Action Plans and how to develop and leverage them for long-term success.

Those who attended the course received Key Accounts Executive continuing education credits.
